He was looking at some GranTurismos, and you can buy 5 year old ones for 53K. Now if I know my cars, this will have huge maintenance every 5K miles, and will breakdown for no reason. Please remember my Dad isn't a car guy, he doesn't like working on cars and he doesn't really make sure everything is running okay. So is this a good idea or a bad idea.

Tell him to get this instead

Well, they do look AMAZING!

If he has money to blow to drive a car he likes, then it's a good idea. Otherwise, it's not.

A friend of mine had one. He got rid of it because of the über expensive regular maintenance. Brakes, oil changes, anything... Expensive.
![]() 10/27/2013 at 22:27 |

Yes they do, but I just think it is a bad idea. I feel like he should save that money for a father son project car.

No can do, not sexy enough.
![]() 10/27/2013 at 22:27 |

I just feel like it isn't going to be taken carry of well.

I would say this is a bad idea, but then I would be admitting that my own search for 5 year old Quattroportes is a bad idea. That's not something I'm willing to accept just yet.
![]() 10/27/2013 at 22:28 |

How much is uber expensive if you don't mind me asking.

Come on! Italian prestige, with K car reliability!
![]() 10/27/2013 at 22:30 |

I mean if you are willing to(and able to) pay for repairs and maintenance then I say do it!
![]() 10/27/2013 at 22:31 |

Does it have a V8?

hahahahahahahahaha

Call a Maserati dealer and get a quote on a brake job. Also, find a company willing to insure it (many insurance companies don't insure exotics) and get a quote before you are sure he can afford to own the car, not just buy it.
I mean, financially he will take a bath whether he can afford it or not, but if he just loves the car or wants to say he owns a Maserati, it could be worth it.
![]() 10/27/2013 at 22:33 |

What? Whats so funny? I mean it COULD have a V8. Right? Right?!?!
![]() 10/27/2013 at 22:34 |

That is what I am telling him, but he won't listen. Hopefully the word of many internet people will change that.

I don't want to say this car is a disgrace but it totally is.

Oh it absolutely is lol
![]() 10/27/2013 at 22:42 |

Better than K-Car prestige with Italian reliability.
![]() 10/27/2013 at 22:43 |

As a 20 year old college student, I'd be stretching pretty far to buy one, let alone keep up its maintenance. Besides, I already have one Italian money hole and if both my vehicles were Italian I would just be asking for something to burn down.

Much as I hate to say it, but if you are not a car person, then something like this is best for you.

Sometimes it's not always that bad...

It's a bad idea, but it's one of the awesomest bad ideas your dad could have.

Maybe a new Ghibli? He needs to get that the cost of owning a Gran Turismo could be catastrophic conceivably. Oil Changes seem to range from $350 to $750 at the dealership which is a very wide range. Small Service intervals run about $1600 whereas the major services (including plugs, trans fluid, accessory belt) run a bit more. Annually or every 12k miles. He needs to understand the plastics are prone to melting as well. Research. Research. Research. Show him the forums.
![]() 10/27/2013 at 23:07 |
|
Actually I have been searching the forums and this is the information I got. If the new Ghibli is around the 60K mark maybe, but otherwise it is off. I say he buys a Camry and then we buy a 280z and do awesome things with that!
![]() 10/27/2013 at 23:08 |
|
What is the other car you own?
![]() 10/27/2013 at 23:14 |
|
Yeah, but how will we get the 280z!!! It is supposed to be a project car for father and son! :'(
![]() 10/27/2013 at 23:15 |
|
I actually suggested this to him. Rejected.
![]() 10/27/2013 at 23:16 |

Yeah but that is a German car. Imagine it on an Italian car!
![]() 10/27/2013 at 23:28 |

Just a rather temperamental Ducati.
![]() 10/27/2013 at 23:31 |

Tell your dad to get one of these, and the project 280Z you've wanted.
Stylish, fuel-inefficient, decently powerful...
![]() 10/27/2013 at 23:45 |

Who.... are you? This is not only a good idea, it's the BEST idea. Here's why:
![]() 10/27/2013 at 23:57 |
|
Tell him to try an E class or something first to see what the costs are like. Then have him test drive the GT and ask if it's worth spending more for it.
![]() 10/27/2013 at 23:59 |
|
If he is like me, he will hear it and go "Oh yes it is." Luckily he isn't. I like your idea. Plus this will give me the opportunity to test drive a GT :D
![]() 10/28/2013 at 00:34 |
|
Just buy both.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 00:35 |
|
Unlike the GranTurismo, it has portholes! 10/10, would buy.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 00:40 |
|
Ah yes, now I remember. Enjoy your dry clutch shenanigans!
![]() 10/28/2013 at 00:41 |
|
But maintenance! Also give this a listen
![]() 10/28/2013 at 00:42 |
|
He doesn't want something old though. He doesn't like the idea of 280z, just cause it is more than 5 years old.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 00:46 |
|
I've always kind of like these a bit. The automatic Turbo IIs and Mitsubishi 6G72s weren't exactly the greatest, but the Maserati engined ones were pretty awesome.
There were 501 of the Chrysler TC by Maserati made with the a special version of the Chrysler K engine. It had a Maserati designed 16 valve head cast by Cosworth, Mahle pistons, Crane Cam camshafts machined by Maserati, and an IHI turbocharger. It produced 200 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque, which was impressive for a 2.2 liter 4 cylinder in 1989. Those 501 produced were also the only TCs built with 5-speed manual transmissions. The only real problem with the TC was the fact that it was FWD.

Are you ready for another laugh?
![]() 10/28/2013 at 00:52 |

Theres at least 6 Maseratis on campus here. No actual Maserati dealership in a few hundred miles. Somehow they manage to keep moving. Most of them are driven Chinese students who like to hit things and neglect maintenance, so they must be more durable than I thought.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 00:56 |
|
Dat sequential downshift! Goddamn! It sounds so mean, but also musical, like an early Megadeth song. and as far as the maintenance, just don't daily drive/commute in it to keep the mileage down.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 01:01 |

I remember those very popular 90's wheels, aren't they american racing?
![]() 10/28/2013 at 01:02 |

Wait where do you go? Because at my school there is at least 6 Maseratis mostly driven by Chinese students who like to hit things and neglect maintenance. . .
![]() 10/28/2013 at 01:05 |
|
My dad doesn't plan to drive it too often, so maybe it is a good idea. . .
![]() 10/28/2013 at 01:08 |

That is exactly how every large university is. I see the same thing where I am at. Brand new M3's with dents in all corners, Audi R8's driven like morons, etc.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 01:14 |
|
Are you sure we all don't go to the same university?
![]() 10/28/2013 at 01:15 |
|
Indiana University. Our business and medical schools have big names in Asia, so we have a huge international student population. Campus is gridlocked with brand new German metal. My favorite is the R8 V10 with stuffed panda bears on the headrests or the Cayenne Turbo covered in rhinestone Hello Kitty decals...
It's annoy when you see a little Korean girl turn the wrong way down a one way street in her Quattroporte or someone curbing a new M6 :(
China has no driving standards, so they come here with no real experience and our DMV just hands them a license.

American Racing Estrellas, I believe.

I go to Purdue, and we have the same problem. There is a new Aston, GT500, CLS63 AMG, a host of GTRs, AMG Mercs, and Maseratis, and so many more. All driven pretty terribly. The ones at my apartments have curb rash everywhere it is crazy!
There was an auto Supra on campus, rumor is he crashed it. I saw a Rx-8 that had a body kit and big o' wing, and it was broken to pieces.
![]() 10/28/2013 at 01:39 |

It's possible, but highly unlikely. :)

YES!!!!!

Price an aftermarket warranty. See if u can even get one as it should cover major stuff. Maintenance is still not cheap obviously but it coukd help. Can he find a CPO from a dealer? Might be less scary

He was complaining that brake jobs (just pads) were north of $1k, oil changes were over $500, normal checks were over a grand. Don't quote me for exact amounts, but they were significantly higher than normal services. This was a couple of years ago as well.
